February 21 is International Mother Language Day. We’ve interpreted our theme loosely to include features on our mothers and our mother lands: figures that inspire our deepest love and most passionate resistance. Our relationship status is “complicated,” because while there is plenty to love about our island home, its current and historical practices of exclusion are so distant from the “paradise” we believe that this island can be.
Our island is at once tragic and awe-inspiring, full of possibility and stale. We are roots people mired in riches, and we are suffering from this dissonance. It is my faith in our loving essence that keeps me committed to our growth.
